Resignation of Long-Time CEO of Hockey India, Elena Norman

Elena Norman, the CEO of Hockey India (HI) for an impressive 13 years, has made the decision to step down from her position. This move has been prompted by the challenging political environment within the federation. Norman, who played a pivotal role in the success of Indian hockey during her time as CEO, expressed her disappointment but felt that the current circumstances made it untenable for her to continue in her role.

In recent months, Norman encountered difficulties in receiving her salary, which had already been reduced the previous year. This ultimately led to the non-payment of her salary for the last three months, resulting in her resorting to legal action. Only after sending a legal notice and the intervention of HI’s legal counsel did Norman finally receive her remuneration.

Norman was appointed as CEO in 2011, during a period when HI was undergoing significant restructuring. Under the leadership of Narinder Batra, HI was officially recognized as the national governing body for hockey in India. However, following Batra’s resignation from various positions in international sporting bodies, new leadership took over, which resulted in a challenging work environment for Norman.

The presence of two opposing factions within HI made it increasingly difficult for Norman to fulfil her responsibilities effectively. Despite the support from some members, the overall operational dynamics hampered her ability to perform her duties optimally. Thus, Norman made the difficult decision to tender her resignation and will be leaving her post on Thursday, after which she will return to her home country of Australia.

Dilip Tirkey, the President of Hockey India, expressed his appreciation for Norman’s efforts and dedication to the sport. He highlighted her instrumental role in the growth and success of Indian hockey during her tenure. Tirkey conveyed his best wishes to Norman for her future endeavours, acknowledging her significant contributions to the sport in India.

During her time as CEO, Norman oversaw several significant achievements, including the Indian men’s team winning an Olympic bronze after a 41-year medal drought, as well as the women’s team achieving a historic fourth-place finish. Additionally, India hosted various international hockey events under her leadership, showcasing the country’s growing prominence in the sport.

Norman’s resignation follows closely on the heels of the departure of Janneke Schopman, the chief coach of the Indian women’s team. Both resignations have underscored the challenges faced within the hockey federation, particularly in supporting key personnel such as coaches and administrators.

As Elena Norman bids farewell to Hockey India, her lasting legacy will be the indelible impact she has had on shaping the future of Indian hockey. Her unwavering dedication and significant contributions have played a pivotal role in elevating the sport to new heights.
