Naselle Comets Shocked by Columbia Adventist in 1B High School Boys Basketball State Tournament

Naselle High School’s 1B state tournament journey culminated in a challenging contest against Columbia Adventist, resulting in a 54-51 defeat. Despite an impressive start to the season, boasting a 13-game winning streak, the Comets were unable to maintain their advantage in the second half, despite their determined efforts.

Coach Bill Olsen lamented the missed opportunity in the pivotal third quarter, which allowed Columbia Adventist to mount a comeback. The opposing team’s senior guard, Collin Delaney, played a pivotal role in shifting the momentum of the game with a game-high 18 points and crucial plays in the final quarter.

Jacob Pakenen’s exceptional performance and leadership on the court were insufficient to rescue the Comets, as they ultimately succumbed to the Kodiaks. Despite a 48 percent shooting percentage and demonstrated proficiency from long range, Naselle’s 23 turnovers proved to be their undoing, allowing Columbia Adventist to capitalize and secure victory.

Looking towards the off-season, the team experiences both disappointment over the season’s end and optimism for the future. With the majority of the roster poised to return next season, including key starters, there is a strong belief in the Comets’ potential for a resurgence next year.

Although the loss marks the conclusion of a tumultuous season for Naselle, the team remains steadfast in their determination to learn from their experiences and stage a strong comeback in the next season.
