Maple Grove Boys Hockey Suffers Defeat in 5AA Final

The series of section titles for the Maple Grove boys’ hockey team has finally come to a halt. After securing the last four Section 5AA championships, the Crimson were defeated 5-2 by Centennial in the section final on Thursday evening.

Centennial’s top goal scorer, Heath Nelson, provided the Cougars with the opening goal of the game with just under five minutes remaining in the first period. Despite this, Maple Grove promptly responded with a goal from Lucas Busch, levelling the score at one.

Sadly for Maple Grove, Centennial took the lead for good when they took advantage of the Crimson’s consecutive penalties in the second period, resulting in a 5-on-3 power play for the Cougars. Both Heath Nelson and Nick Carls scored power play goals, securing the lead for their team.

Centennial’s victory marks their first section title in six years. Conversely, Maple Grove ended the season with a record of 21-7.

The team’s coach, Steve Benson, conveyed his disappointment following the defeat. “It’s always difficult to witness a talented group of individuals fall short after investing so much effort. We encountered a formidable opponent, but I am incredibly proud of our team’s dedication this season,” he remarked.

Despite the setback, the Maple Grove boys’ hockey team remains upbeat. “We gave it our all on the ice, and we have much to be proud of. We will use this as motivation to return even stronger next season,” stated team captain, Michael Thompson.

The defeat signifies the conclusion of an era for the Maple Grove boys’ hockey team, yet it also presents new opportunities for advancement and progress. As they contemplate on the journey of this season, the team is already looking ahead to the future with determination and perseverance.
