The Windsor Spitfires have encountered a challenging period on the ice as of late. In their recent matchup against the Flint Firebirds, they suffered a 7-3 defeat, with late-period and early-period goals, along with a short-handed marker, working against them.
The game commenced with Noah Morneau of the Spitfires taking the lead, only for Markas Samenas of the Firebirds to level the score after the initial 20 minutes. The Firebirds then swiftly gained the lead when Simon Slavicek scored a mere 29 seconds into the second period. Former Spitfire Oliver Peer added to their woes with another goal, marking the 17th short-handed goal allowed by Windsor this season. Within less than eight minutes into the second period, Flint’s Tristan Bertucci extended their lead to 4-1.
Despite their difficulties, the Spitfires managed to narrow the margin with goals by Ryan Abraham and Nathan Gaymes. However, Flint promptly responded with a goal from Nolan Dann, leaving the Spitfires trailing 5-3 as they entered the final period. The Firebirds cemented their triumph with two additional goals, resulting in Windsor’s third consecutive loss. With just 10 games remaining in the regular season, the Spitfires currently trail Flint by 13 points for the last playoff spot in the Western Conference.
In the meantime, the Leamington Flyers are also enduring a tough period, having suffered five consecutive losses, including a 4-1 defeat to the Toronto St. Michael’s Buzzers on the road. Despite holding a 42-33 shot advantage, the Flyers only managed to score once, courtesy of Marquise Brown. They will conclude their regular-season play with a road match against the Brantford 99ers.
