The Olds Grizzlys, despite the addition of 14 new players, are currently experiencing difficulties in the junior A hockey league. Nonetheless, Head Coach Scott Atkinson maintains a positive outlook on the team’s future and its ability to adapt to junior A hockey play.
At the team’s annual awards banquet held at the Pomeroy Inn & Suites on February 18, Atkinson reassured the attendees that, despite their current last-place standing in the 11-team league with a 10-37-3-3 record, he firmly believes that the team’s potential and the individual efforts of each player do not accurately reflect their position.
In acknowledging the recent challenging weekend marked by losses to the Camrose Kodiaks and Lloydminster Bobcats, Atkinson emphasized the team’s youthful nature and expressed his confidence in their potential for future success.
In the meantime, Team President Josh Erdman expressed his appreciation for the players’ dedication to the team and their commitment to personal and community development. He stressed that junior hockey encompasses more than just wins and losses, highlighting the significance of forming friendships and actively participating in the community.
Erdman also encouraged the players to value their time in junior hockey, reminding them that this phase of their career is finite and should be cherished to the fullest.
Amidst the festivities, the club held its annual jersey auction, with Team Captain Cade Moxham’s jersey fetching over $1,000 and Defenceman Tait Humphries’ auction featuring an impressive backflip.
Although the Olds Grizzlys are currently facing challenges, with the guidance of their coach and the support of their community, they remain optimistic for better days ahead. The team continues to diligently work towards improving their on-ice performance while also actively contributing to the community.
