Australian football star and Chelsea striker, Sam Kerr, has officially entered a plea of not guilty in response to a racially aggravated harassment charge filed against her by a London police officer. The 30-year-old, who serves as the captain of the Matildas, is slated to proceed to trial after being indicted for the aforementioned offence, which stems from an incident that took place in January 2023. Kerr made a personal appearance at Kingston upon Thames Crown Court on Monday to formally refute the accusation.
The incident in question reportedly pertains to an encounter with a police officer who was dispatched to address a complaint regarding a taxi fare in Twickenham. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police cited Kerr’s charge as racially aggravated under Section 4A of the Public Order Act 1986. Nevertheless, Kerr contends her innocence and is scheduled to have her case heard on 1 February 2025 at Wimbledon Magistrates Court.
This legal contention arises at a time when Kerr is already sidelined from play, due to a previous anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained during Chelsea’s warm weather training camp in Morocco earlier this year.
