Celebrating Diversity on the Field: Wellington Prepares for Inaugural Rainbow Rippa Festival

The Wellington Rugby Football Union (WRFU) and New Zealand Rugby (NZR) have collaborated to present an exciting event for the rugby community – the Rainbow Rippa Rugby Festival. This unique event will be held at Waitangi Park on Sunday, March 10 from 10.00am to 2.00pm as part of the Wellington Pride Festival, and is open to new and existing rugby participants over 16 years of age. All individuals are encouraged to partake in the festivities, regardless of their background, as the event aims to honour diversity and inclusivity in the sport of rugby.

Lucy Barry, WRFU’s Community Rugby Activator, conveyed her enthusiasm for the forthcoming festival, underscoring its significance in championing inclusivity within the rugby community. She stressed that the Rainbow Rippa event is indicative of the organization’s sincere commitment to supporting and respecting rainbow communities. Barry also articulated her personal belief in the necessity of establishing a hospitable environment for everyone, particularly the younger generation, so they may feel at ease and embraced in the rugby community.

Judy O’Brien, NZR’s Culture, Diversity, and Inclusion Manager, also voiced her endorsement for the event, emphasizing the dedication to establishing secure and hospitable spaces for members of the LGBTTQIA+ community within the rugby organization. O’Brien recognized that while rainbow individuals have always been part of the rugby community, they have not always felt entirely secure and accepted. She emphasized the significance of endeavors such as the Rainbow Rippa festival in bridging this divide and rendering rugby a game for all.

The festival will showcase Rippa rugby, a 7-aside game that welcomes teams of up to 10 players. Individuals and teams are encouraged to register their interest in participating, however, spontaneous attendees are also welcome to join in the festivities on the day of the event.

The Rainbow Rippa Festival is not merely about playing rugby, it is about fostering an environment of acceptance, support, and celebration of diversity within the rugby community. It is a commendable initiative that encapsulates the values of NZR: being welcoming, striving for excellence, displaying passion, and playing with fairness.

The inaugural Rainbow Rippa Festival guarantees a day filled with camaraderie, excitement, and above all, a celebration of the diverse and inclusive spirit of the sport of rugby. Whether you are an experienced rugby player or a complete novice, this event presents an opportunity to be part of something remarkably special. Let us unite and ensure this festival is a memorable celebration of diversity and acceptance in the rugby community.
