The 2024 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Women’s Ice Hockey Team has been officially announced, and it is with great pleasure that we recognize Maddie McCollins of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls for being named the Kwik Trip Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. This prestigious accolade also places her in esteemed company, as only the second individual in conference history to achieve this honour. Furthermore, we extend our congratulations to Alexa Backmann of UW-Eau Claire for her recognition as the Kwik Trip Newcomer of the Year, as well as to Joe Cranston of UW-River Falls for being honoured as the Kwik Trip Coach of the Year.
With a commanding 62 points, 32 goals, and eight power-play goals, McCollins has undoubtedly earned the spotlight, leading the WIAC in these categories. Her 30 assists tie her for first place, and her five game-winning goals place her in second. Notably, she has also achieved a pair of hat tricks, showcasing her exceptional talent on the ice.
As a newcomer, Backmann has quickly established herself as a force to be reckoned with, starting 16 games for the Blugolds and amassing an impressive 12-4 record. Her 1.62 goals-against-average, 282 saves, and .901 save percentage are a testament to her outstanding skills. It is worth noting that a newcomer is defined as a student-athlete who has participated in women’s ice hockey for the first time this season. Furthermore, transfers are not eligible unless they did not participate in women’s ice hockey at their previous institution.
Additionally, we acknowledge MaKenna Aure, Megan Goodreau, and Alex Hantge of UW-River Falls for their first team selection, with Aure notably being a repeat selection from the previous season. Courtney Leising of UW-Stevens Point and Jenna Hoops of UW-Superior have also reclaimed their spots on the prestigious team. Cranston’s coaching acumen has not gone unnoticed, as he has received the coaching honour for the fourth time in his career following the Falcons’ historic 28-0 record, securing the WIAC regular-season title and the O’Brien Cup. UW-River Falls’ NCAA tournament bid further underscores their exceptional performance.
In addition to the All-WIAC Women’s Ice Hockey Team, an All-Sportsmanship Team has been named to honour individuals who have displayed exemplary sportsmanship throughout the season. The inclusion of one member from each school adds a special touch to the acknowledgment of good sportsmanship within the league.
It is truly inspiring to witness such a diverse and impressive group of athletes coming together to celebrate their hard work and dedication. We extend our congratulations to all the honourees and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavours.
