Colchester resident and entrepreneur, Richard Hall-Smith, is elated as plans for new padel tennis courts in the city have received approval. Aged 38, he is the founder of Padel United UK, an organization established in partnership with Padel United, based in Sweden. Hall-Smith’s vision to introduce the pleasures of padel tennis to Colchester is now materializing, with the recent endorsement of plans for five courts at the Leisure World Tennis Centre on Eudo Road.
The construction of the courts, scheduled for completion by May or June this year, will entail enclosed walls, fencing, and floodlights. The installation site will be situated adjacent to the existing grass and hard surface tennis courts, thereby enhancing the overall sporting facilities in the city.
“We’ve been working on it for years so it’s a long time coming,” remarked Richard. “We’re really excited. Colchester has been the one area everyone has been asking for in the Essex Padel community. We’ve had loads of interest, it’s been amazing.”
The inclusive nature of padel tennis is a key attraction, making it accessible to people from all walks of life. Additionally, the plans incorporate making the sport financially accessible to all and offering coaching from some of the best players and coaches in Essex. Richard also foresees the establishment of an Essex league across sites, thereby increasing the appeal of padel tennis to the community.
Originating from Mexico, padel tennis is a unique racket sport with a combination of squash and tennis elements, which involves the use of plastic and foam bats as well as a standard tennis ball. One of its distinguishing features is the use of walls, adding an extra layer of strategy to the game.
Michelle Burrows, the portfolio holder for leisure, culture and heritage, has expressed her enthusiasm for the project, which is supported by Padel United UK. “We’re excited to unlock the full potential of our public spaces and sport and recreation facilities to improve residents’ health, wellbeing, and happiness,” she said. “By offering facilities that meet community needs, we aim to create a thriving city where everyone can benefit from modern amenities, active lives, and a strong sense of belonging.”
The venture is expected to have a positive impact on the wellbeing and fitness of the people of Colchester, contributing to a healthier and more active community. This development certainly holds the promise of exciting times ahead for sports enthusiasts in the city.
