Zimbabwe’s Edson Chirowodza has expressed his excitement following his recent designation as the President of Africa Beach Hockey. The announcement was made during a virtual meeting of the World Beach Hockey, and Chirowodza is thrilled about assuming this new role while retaining his position as the secretary-general of the Zimbabwe Handball Federation.
Chirowodza has been actively involved in establishing beach hockey structures on the African continent since late last year. He disclosed that approximately 20 countries in Africa are currently participating in beach hockey. Presently, beach hockey is considered a relatively nascent sport in many African countries, with its management overseen by the respective hockey associations or independent structures.
In light of his new responsibilities, Chirowodza is poised to concentrate on setting up structures and organizing competitions for beach hockey in Africa. This also includes collaborating with the Vice President, who is from Egypt and will oversee the Northern part of Africa. Their main objectives encompass establishing structures, conducting coach, referee, and umpire education, and organizing competitions across the continent of Africa.
Despite his new appointment, Chirowodza is dedicated to balancing his responsibilities as the ZHF secretary-general without compromise. His tenure as the President of Africa Beach Hockey spans four years, during which he aims to elevate the profile of beach hockey in the region. He stressed the importance of assembling a strong executive team to ensure the effective administration and development of the sport.
