Remembering Coach Chet Hovde: A Basketball Legend

It is with profound sorrow that we acknowledge the passing of Coach Chet Hovde, a revered personality within the basketball community of Everett. Regarded as an individual who epitomised a passion for the sport, Coach Hovde devoted his life to the game, leaving an indelible impression on those whom he coached and mentored.

Hailing from North Everett, Hovde’s affection for basketball became apparent at a young age. Distinguishing himself as an outstanding player at Everett High School, he went on to enjoy a successful collegiate career, securing a scholarship to represent the University of Washington. Renowned for his outstanding prowess on the court, he was lauded as one of the preeminent shooters to emerge from Everett High School.

In 1979, Hovde commenced his enduring affiliation with the women’s basketball team of Everett Community College. Over a span of 33 years, he steered the team towards numerous triumphs and accolades, clinching three North Region titles. His coaching methodology was underscored by his composed temperament, never resorting to yelling, but instead imparting constructive criticism to his players.

Beyond the realm of basketball, Hovde held a cherished status within his community, recognised for his modesty and fortitude, even in the face of adversity. Former classmates and acquaintances spoke commendably of his character and the influence he wielded over those in his midst.

Coach Hovde is survived by his wife Joan, his three sons – Chad, Ryan, and Adam, in addition to 10 grandchildren. His legacy is destined to endure through the countless lives he impacted with his fervour for basketball and mentorship.

A memorial service is scheduled to be held on April 6 at the gymnasium of Everett High School, bringing together friends, family, and members of the community to commemorate and celebrate the life of Coach Chet Hovde.

His influence is set to reverberate for the years to come, whilst his memory will endure through the myriad individuals whom he inspired and guided.
