Hockey Mizoram shocks Hockey Punjab to secure spot in quarterfinals

The 14th Senior Women National Championship 2024 at the Major Dhyanchand Hockey Stadium Nehrunager, Pimpri witnessed an unexpected turn of events as Hockey Mizoram defeated Hockey Punjab with a score of 4-2, securing the seventh spot in the quarterfinals. This victory topped Pool F with three wins out of three games, pushing Hockey Punjab, Hockey Himachal, and Hockey Rajasthan behind.

The match saw Lalrinpuii scoring two goals in the 6th and 9th minutes, followed by skipper H Lalruatfeli in the 26th minute and Marina Lalramnghaki in the 54th minute, with two converted penalty corners for Hockey Mizoram. On the other hand, Taranpreet Kaur (35th) and Rajwinder Kaur (51st) scored from penalty corners for Hockey Punjab.

With this outcome, Hockey Mizoram will join Hockey Madhya Pradesh, Hockey Maharashtra, Hockey Jharkhand, Hockey Haryana, Hockey Association of Odisha, and Hockey Bengal in the knock-out round. The last spot from Pool G is yet to be decided.

The upcoming quarterfinals will feature Hockey Madhya Pradesh against Hockey Bengal, Hockey Jharkhand against Hockey Mizoram, and Hockey Haryana against Hockey Association of Odisha. As for Hockey Maharashtra, their opponent will be determined after their match on Tuesday.

In other news, Assam Hockey secured a 2-1 victory over Le Puducherry Hockey in an inconsequential Pool D tie, with goals from Priyanshi Singh (25th, 33rd) and R Kaviya (24th) for Le Puducherry Hockey. Additionally, Goans Hockey and Hockey Chandigarh played to a 2-2 draw in a Pool E match, with goals from Umra (30th) and Manisha Dhawal (47th) for Goans Hockey, and Simranjit Kaur (28th) and Rakhi (39th) for Hockey Chandigarh.

Furthermore, in Sunday night’s matches, Hockey Punjab dominated Hockey Himachal with a score of 8-0, while Manipur Hockey secured a 3-0 victory over Hockey Karnataka.
