The death of Konstantin Koltsov, a former professional ice hockey player from Belarus and the partner of tennis sensation Aryna Sabalenka, at the age of 42 has been confirmed by his former club, Salavat Yulaev. The club released a statement expressing their deep sorrow at the loss.
Koltsov had an illustrious career, representing his country at two Winter Olympics and playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League from 2002 to 2006. He was widely known for his impressive speed on the ice and clinched the Russian Super League title with Salavat Yulaev in 2008. He later returned to the club as an assistant coach.
Sabalenka and Koltsov had been in a relationship since June 2021, with the tennis star frequently posting photos of the couple on her Instagram account. In one of her posts, she professed her love for Koltsov and referred to him as her “dearest person, best friend, and strongest support.”
The passing of Koltsov is undoubtedly a devastating loss for Sabalenka and those closest to him. His death comes shortly after Sabalenka’s participation in the Indian Wells tournament, where she reached the last 16. She is scheduled to compete in the Miami Open, but the recent loss of Koltsov will undoubtedly cast a shadow over her upcoming matches.
The sporting community has lost a remarkable athlete and coach, and our thoughts are with Aryna Sabalenka and all those who have been affected by this tragic news.
