Ulster Fly-Half Billy Burns Joins Munster for Next Season

The popular Ulster No10, Billy Burns, has made the surprising decision to join Munster for the upcoming season. The 29-year-old, who has enjoyed six successful seasons at Ulster, is set to join Munster on a one-year contract. This unexpected move has caused quite a stir in the rugby world and has left Ulster fans disheartened by the departure of one of their key players.

Since his arrival from Gloucester in 2018, Burns has made a total of 107 appearances for Ulster. His outstanding performances on the field have earned him a place in the Irish national team, representing Ireland seven times since his debut. His selection for the national team was made possible due to his paternal grandfather’s Irish roots. He received his first cap from Andy Farrell during the 2020 Autumn Nations Cup against Wales.

Burns’ departure leaves a significant gap at Ulster, as he will be taking over from Joey Carbery at Munster. Carbery is set to move to the Top 14’s Bordeaux-Begles at the end of the season, creating an opportunity for Burns to make his mark in his new team. His arrival will bring competition with Ireland fly-half Jack Crowley for the red No10 jersey.

Additionally, Munster has secured contract extensions for prop John Ryan and lock Cian Hurley, both signing one-year deals with the United Rugby Championship winners. The 35-year-old tighthead prop Ryan, who made his Munster debut in 2011, brings a wealth of experience to the team, having made an impressive 217 appearances. Meanwhile, academy product Hurley, at the age of 23, is at the beginning of his Munster career, with only five appearances under his belt so far.

The announcement of Burns’ departure is followed by the news of Ulster’s signing of versatile South Africa Sevens veteran Werner Kok from the Sharks, adding more excitement to the forthcoming season.

Munster’s acquisition of Burns is undoubtedly a significant move for the team and has set the stage for an exciting period ahead, with both Munster and Ulster undergoing major changes in their line-ups. The upcoming rugby season is indeed shaping up to be one filled with anticipation and surprises.

The transfer of Burns to Munster is a noteworthy event in the rugby world and has certainly left fans eager to see how the next season will unfold for both Ulster and Munster. The comings and goings are sure to make the upcoming season an exhilarating one for all rugby enthusiasts, and we can only wait in anticipation for the action to unfold on the field.
