The Lorton Cup was recently won by John Purdy at Axe Cliff Golf Club, showcasing an exceptional performance in the Winter Eclectic competition. This impressive display of skill and determination was reported by Dave Bruce and exemplified the competitive spirit and sportsmanship of our club members.
During the Ladies’ monthly Medal event, only three participants, Paula Heasman, Karin Cox, and Sally Fright, completed the entire 18 holes in challenging weather conditions. The remaining members sought shelter from the strong winds in the comfort of the clubhouse near the inviting wood burner.
The highlight of the week was the annual Captains’ Drive, where the new leaders of the club – Stella Thompson for the Ladies, Richard Gibbons for the Seniors, and Kelly Peters for the Men’s Section – were welcomed. The strong turnout reflected the members’ support and respect for the newly appointed Captains.
Stella Thompson, a retired palliative care nurse, has chosen Seaton as her preferred place of work and is serving her second season as captain. Richard Gibbons, a longstanding member of the club and a prominent figure in Seaton’s business community, now enjoys his retirement by balancing golf with caring for his grandchildren. Kelly Peters, a relatively new member, joined the club after receiving a round of golf as a gift and has since become an avid golfer. A skilled self-employed carpenter, Kelly resides in Seaton with his family, where his twin daughters are his ardent supporters.
The Captains’ Drive event also featured an impressive winning team consisting of Andrew Thompson, Luke Snell, and the young talent Amy Rodriquez, who contributed 34 points out of the team’s total of 50. The day’s success was further highlighted by raising £650 for the Captains’ chosen charities, including Prostate Cancer UK, Seaton Hospice at Home, and The Golf Foundation.
The atmosphere was one of celebration and camaraderie as members came together to support the club and its charitable initiatives.
In conclusion, the recent events at Axe Cliff Golf Club showcased the talent, dedication, and community spirit that define the club. As the new Captains lead the way, the members are poised for an exciting and fulfilling season ahead.
