Tennis Community Supports Sabalenka at Miami Open Following Tragic Loss

Aryna Sabalenka, the current second-ranked female tennis player in the world, has made the decision to participate in the Miami Open, despite the recent passing of her boyfriend, Konstantin Koltsov, a former NHL ice hockey player. His death has been reported as an ‘apparent suicide’ by the Miami-Dade Police.

The 25-year-old Australian Open champion has been diligently practicing at the Hard Rock Stadium for the Miami Open and is scheduled to compete against Spain’s Paula Badosa in the second round. Badosa, who is a close friend of Sabalenka, has expressed unease in playing against her given the recent tragedy she has faced.

Miami-Dade Police spokesperson, Argemis Colome, confirmed that Koltsov’s tragic death was a result of him jumping from a balcony at the St. Regis Bal Harbour Resort. In response to Sabalenka’s situation, the tennis community has extended their support, with former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, expressing deep sorrow over her circumstances and offering her support.

American player, Jessica Pegula, also acknowledged the tragic news and emphasized the importance of offering support to Sabalenka during this difficult time.

The Belarus hockey federation mourned the loss of Koltsov, who had a notable playing career that included a stint with the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL, as well as appearances at two Winter Olympic Games and nine world championships. Koltsov and his wife, Julia, divorced in 2020, after which he began a relationship with Sabalenka.

The tennis community has come together to express their solidarity with Sabalenka during this challenging period. The support and compassion shown by her fellow players exemplify the sense of unity and empathy within the professional tennis world. As Sabalenka bravely continues to compete in the Miami Open, her strength and courage serve as an inspiration to her fans and fellow athletes.

This tragedy serves as a reminder of the significance of coming together and supporting one another in times of grief and loss. Our thoughts are with Sabalenka and all those affected by this heartbreaking situation.
