Creating a Green Legacy: The New Community Orchard in Rugby Park

The Jubilee Recreation Ground in New Bilton, Rugby, is poised to become the new location for a community orchard, adding vibrancy to the area. Recently, fruit trees such as cherry, apple, apricot, pear, plum, and quince were planted with plans to allow residents to enjoy the harvest once the trees start bearing fruit. This project has been made possible through funding from the Coronation Living Heritage Fund, which aims to promote tree planting initiatives across the UK, particularly focusing on the establishment of coronation ‘micro woods’ and community orchards.

The vision for the creation of this orchard was set into motion thanks to a successful bid for funding by Warwickshire County Council (WCC). In collaboration with Rugby Borough Council (RBC), the New Bilton Community Association has been instrumental in developing a community growing project at the Jubilee Recreation Ground, making it the perfect venue for this green initiative.

RBC leader Coun Derek Poole expressed his pleasure in the partnership with the New Bilton Community Association and WCC, emphasizing the significance of the recreation ground as a valued community asset and a recipient of the Green Flag Community Award. The collaborative efforts have paved the way for the planting of a community orchard, which is expected to yield fruits in the coming years.

Coun John Slinger, representing New Bilton ward, also praised the joint efforts that led to the establishment of the orchard. “The planting of trees improves the urban environment and people’s lives,” he remarked, highlighting the potential long-term benefits of the project for the local community.

Coun Heather Timms, WCC’s environment, climate, and culture spokeswoman, further emphasized the positive impact of community orchards, pointing out their role in bringing people together for tree planting activities and community engagement. These orchards not only contribute to increasing bee populations, but also provide learning opportunities for schools and communities about wildlife, planting, and tree care while offering a sustainable source of healthy food.

Overall, the establishment of the community orchard at Jubilee Recreation Ground marks an important step towards enhancing the environment and fostering community engagement in New Bilton. With its potential to provide both aesthetic and practical benefits, this green initiative is a testament to the collective efforts of various organisations and members of the community, demonstrating the positive outcomes that can be achieved through collaborative environmental projects.
