New Head Coach Theotis Porter Brings Winning Experience to Phoebus High School Basketball Team

Phoebus High recently unveiled their latest addition to the coaching staff, as they warmly welcomed Theotis Porter to assume the position of head coach for the boys basketball team. His appointment follows a triumphant tenure at Smithfield High, where he led the boys basketball team to victory in the Class 4 boys basketball state championship in 2021.

Porter’s tenure as a coach has garnered him a distinguished reputation for excellence, with his leadership and strategic acumen being integral to Smithfield High’s success. Notably, his team achieved an impeccable 10-0 record in 2021, culminating in a remarkable 61-54 win over Handley of Winchester in the state championship.

Prior to joining Phoebus High, Porter served as an assistant coach for 13 seasons at King’s Fork, contributing to the Bulldogs’ state championship season in 2008-09. His extensive experience at both the high school and junior-college levels has endowed him with a profound understanding of the game and the capacity to inspire and mentor young athletes.

Upon assuming his role as the head coach, Porter conveyed his enthusiasm for the position by stating, “It’s good to have someone who’s been to the big dance and won the big dance.” His unwavering dedication to the sport and his commitment to fostering a winning mentality among his players are evident, establishing him as a valuable asset to the Phoebus High basketball program.

The Phantoms’ athletic director, Maurice Ward, commended Porter’s track record, underscoring his success at the state level as a pivotal factor in his appointment. With the retirement of former coach James Daniel, whose leadership resulted in 17 triumphant seasons, Porter’s arrival injects a fresh perspective and a winning mindset into the Phoebus High basketball team.

Porter’s coaching journey has not been devoid of personal sacrifices – following his prosperous season at Smithfield, he resigned to pursue his aspiration of coaching at an elevated level. However, he dedicated the subsequent two seasons to nurturing the athletic aspirations of his three sons, TJ, Jordan, and Aydrian, before deeming the timing opportune to assume the new position at Phoebus High.

With aspirations of coaching in one of the state’s most esteemed basketball leagues, Porter eagerly anticipates the challenge of coaching in the highly competitive Peninsula District, where he will engage with esteemed coaches such as Stefan Welsh, Eric Brown, and Lamont Strothers. He acknowledges the prestige of his peers and their capacity to compel him to evolve into an even better coach.

In embracing his new role, Porter brings a winning mindset and a wealth of experience to the Phoebus High basketball program. His commitment to mentoring young athletes and instilling in them the values of diligence, preparation, and discipline will undoubtedly shape the team’s future success.

The appointment of Theotis Porter as the head coach underscores Phoebus High’s dedication to nurturing a culture of excellence and success within their basketball program. As the new season approaches, the anticipation and excitement surrounding Porter’s leadership are palpable, marking the commencement of an enthralling new chapter for the Phoebus High basketball team.
