The anticipation is palpable as UVM’s men’s basketball team, along with their devoted fans, prepare for the NCAA basketball tournament known as March Madness. Fans from various regions of the country are converging on Brooklyn to demonstrate their backing for the Catamounts.
Derek Punt from Colchester and Katie from New York City are just a couple of the numerous fans eagerly anticipating the tournament. According to Derek, “We attend all the games,” while Katie mentions, “We relish watching Vermont whenever possible.”
The recent open practice on Thursday attracted a large contingent of supporters dressed in green and gold, fervently cheering on their team. Hayes Reza, a proud former student and team manager from the class of 2004, conveyed his elation by stating, “Each victory enhances the program’s standing, and I am optimistic about further progress.”
Many alumni maintain a strong connection with the university. Katie, now residing in New York City, lauded the team, stating, “They have a solid and well-earned reputation as a formidable team.” Ken Lynes, who journeyed from Burlington, also conveyed his unwavering support, saying, “I have been a lifelong fan and have savored the advancement of the program, and this success is another milestone.”
Anticipation is particularly high for those who have been following the team for an extended period. Lynes reflected on the 2005 game when the Catamounts emerged victorious and expressed hope for a similar outcome this time. “I was present in 2005 in Worcester, Mass when the Cats defeated the orange. And I will be there tomorrow night when the Catamounts defeat the Blue Devils,” he exclaimed.
However, for some fans, this game holds special significance. Derek Punt remembers a narrow defeat to Duke in 2013 and views the upcoming game as an opportunity for redemption. “I feel like it was taken from us, so this could be our chance for payback,” he shared.
The excitement is not confined to the fans alone. WCAX will broadcast a pregame show beginning tonight at 6:45 p.m., followed by the highly anticipated match between the Catamounts and the Blue Devils at 7:10 p.m. Basketball enthusiasts are undoubtedly in for a treat.
As the March Madness tournament commences, it is evident that the support for UVM runs deep. The unity and camaraderie among the fans are a testament to the strong bond they share with their beloved team.
