After a 41-day hiatus, the William & Mary women’s golf team is preparing to host the Kingsmill Intercollegiate at the renowned Kingsmill River Course in Williamsburg. The tournament is scheduled to take place on Monday and Tuesday.
The event will consist of 54-holes, with 36 to be played on Monday and 18 on Tuesday. The competition will commence at 8:30 a.m. on Monday with a shotgun start, followed by the start at 9 a.m. on Tuesday.
During their last outing at the Advanced Partners Collegiate, the Tribe secured a T-9 finish out of 14 teams, showing promising scores of 303-317-310 over the course of three days. Freshman player Mary Grace Dunigan performed exceptionally well, finishing 6-over-par and securing a T-5 place out of 78 players.
Dunigan, who has had an exceptional start in her collegiate career, made a significant contribution to the team’s performance during the Advanced Partners Collegiate. Her remarkable scores of 72-73-77 in the competition were a testament to her talent and potential. Moreover, in the fall games, she played in all 14 rounds and boasted an impressive scoring average of 75.57, which is the second-best on the team.
Grad student Mikah McDonnell stands out as one of the most experienced players on the relatively young W&M team. Having participated in 86 career rounds for the Green and Gold, her contributions have been invaluable. If she continues to play in the remaining spring rounds for the Tribe, she is set to conclude her career as the seventh-ranking player in program history in terms of rounds played.
The team has a strong history of defending their home turf in their spring events over the last decade. With an impressive track record of consistently finishing in the top half of the field in their Kingsmill spring tournament, and securing a position in the top five in eight of these events, the prospects look bright for the Tribe.
This will mark the second time this season that W&M hosts an event at Kingsmill’s River Course. Their previous outing at the William & Mary Invitational resulted in a fifth-place finish out of nine teams, with scores of 300-298-312.
The Kingsmill Intercollegiate will see the participation of 10 teams, including Boston University, Bucknell, CSUN, Hofstra, Maryland Eastern Shore, Monmouth, Sacred Heart, Radford, and Penn. It promises to be an exciting and competitive event, with each team bringing their A-game to the tournament.
The tournament will take place at the prestigious River Course at Kingsmill, designed by the renowned architect Pete Dye. With a par of 72 and stretching 6,200 yards for the Kingsmill Intercollegiate, the course presents a formidable challenge for the players. Its final three holes, set against the backdrop of the historic James River, add to the allure of the course. Notably, the course has seen victories by some of the most esteemed professional players, including names like Ariya Jutanugarn, Lexi Thompson, and Jack Nicklaus.
As the Kingsmill Intercollegiate approaches, the William & Mary women’s golf team is eager to showcase their skills and make their mark on the competition. The talented lineup of players, including the likes of Mary Grace Dunigan and Mikah McDonnell, is poised to deliver an outstanding performance. With their determination and unwavering spirit, the team is prepared to take on the challenge and etch their names in the annals of women’s collegiate golf.
