Councilman Shaun Abreu, who represents District 7 in the City Council, has unveiled the finalist projects eligible for funding through the participatory budgeting process. This initiative aims to empower residents to have a say in how city funds are allocated to neighborhood projects.
Residents will have the opportunity to cast their votes for the selected projects from April 6th to April 14th. In-person voting sites include Abreu’s district office at 500 West 141st Street, as well as the Bloomingdale Library and Recirculation Community Library. Online voting is also available at pbnyc.org/vote, commencing on April 6th.
According to Councilman Abreu, participatory budgeting is a testament to democracy in action, as it allows citizens to actively engage in civic affairs and contribute to the positive transformation of their neighborhoods. A total of £1 million has been earmarked for the chosen projects in this process.
The proposed projects for the Upper West Side and Morningside Heights include the renovation of Happy Warrior Playground, resurfacing of basketball courts in Riverside Park, installation of air conditioners in the Mott Hall II 5th floor gym, new turf for fields in Riverside Park, repair of steps at 108th Street and Riverside Drive, beautification of Morningside Park Farmers Market entrance, and tree planting in Manhattan Community Board 7.
These projects aim to enhance community spaces, improve recreational facilities, and contribute to the overall wellbeing of residents in the area. With the funding allocated for these initiatives, residents can look forward to enjoying upgraded and safer amenities, from revitalised playgrounds to improved sports facilities.
Residents are encouraged to participate in the voting process and make their voices heard in deciding which projects will receive the necessary funding. By contributing to this initiative, residents can play an active role in shaping the future of their community and ensuring that public funds are allocated to projects that align with the needs and priorities of the neighbourhood.
