It is with deep regret and heavy hearts that we bid adieu to the former Neath RFC prop, Martin Jones, who passed away a mere three days following a special testimonial match held in his honour. Jones, a widely adored figure within the Welsh rugby community, had been courageously battling a prolonged illness.
This past Friday, a heartening display of support took place at The Gnoll, as former comrades of Martin, including illustrious names such as Arwel Thomas and Gerwyn Price, congregated for a fundraising match. The primary aim was to raise funds to ensure Jones could spend his final days in comfort. Hailing from the Swansea Valley, Martin’s commendable rugby career saw him representing Cwmtwrch, Ystradgynlais, Llanelli, Swansea, Celtic Warriors, and Cardiff Blues. His tenure with Neath RFC was particularly noteworthy as he unerringly participated in 81 games for the Welsh All Blacks, a true testament to his skill and unwavering commitment to the sport.
In recollection of Martin’s tenure at Neath RFC, club secretary Mike Price conveyed his sorrow at the loss, emphasizing that despite the challenging circumstances, it was consolatory that Martin had the opportunity to reunite with his former teammates at the testimonial match. Neath RFC intends to honour his memory with a minute’s silence before the forthcoming game against Newport.
The news of Martin’s passing also evoked a poignant tribute from his former club, Cardiff, which articulated their sorrow at the loss of a player who had made a notable impact during his tenure with the team.
Martin’s presence within the rugby community has undoubtedly left an enduring impact, and his memory will undeniably continue to be cherished by all those who were fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him.
In homage to Martin Jones, may his legacy in Welsh rugby endure eternally.
