The Heritage Roofing Storm made history by securing their first-ever victory in the 2024 Kootenay Rec Hockey League Championship at the NDCC Arena. After participating in the Rec Hockey league since 2015, the Storm claimed the title by defeating the Backroads Bears 3-2 in the best-of-three final series.
In the first game, the Storm dominated the ice and secured a 5-1 victory with goals from Linden Horswill, Coleton Dawson, and Ben Starbuck. They continued their winning streak with a 5-3 triumph in the second game, during which Nick Phippen scored the game-winning goal in the final two minutes.
Throughout the season, the Storm exhibited exceptional performance, finishing with a remarkable 21-3-5 record. Their relentless determination and strategic gameplay led them to clinch the championship title.
Notable contributions from players like Matt Brind’Amour, Arthur Andrews, and Ben Woodward played a pivotal role in the team’s success. Their collective effort and dedication were evident in their commanding victories over the Warriors in the semi-final, where they secured wins with scores of 5-1 and 6-2.
Furthermore, the outstanding performance of goaltender Cory Berndt also significantly influenced the team’s success. Berndt’s exceptional skills and unwavering resilience earned him the league goaltender trophy for the best goals against average, with an impressive 3.10 during the regular season and an even better 2.33 in the playoffs.
Additionally, the Storm’s offensive prowess was highlighted by the remarkable scoring contributions of Tyler Podgorenko and Arthur Andrews, who led the team with 23 goals and 19 assists, and 21 goals and 18 assists, respectively.
The team’s roster, consisting of talented individuals such as Ben Metzger, John Thequan, Troy Petrick, Justin Podgorenko, and Noah Stevens, among others, showcased a perfect blend of skill and unity. Their relentless pursuit of excellence and passion for the sport played a pivotal role in their journey to the championship victory.
Braelyn Patton and John Katountas, the only two remaining players from the Storm’s inaugural season in 2015/2016, have been an integral part of the team’s growth and success over the years.
