The Maryland men’s basketball program is pleased to announce the official signing of Ja’Kobi Gillespie, from Greeneville, TN, as confirmed by head coach Kevin Willard. With an impressive sophomore season at Belmont, the 6-foot-1 guard brings a wealth of skill and experience to the team.
Gillespie’s time at Belmont was marked by stellar performances, averaging 17.2 points, 4.2 assists, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game. His exceptional on-court abilities earned him a spot on the Missouri Valley All-Conference Second Team and the MVC All-Defensive Team, as well as recognition on the conference’s Most-Improved Team.
Coach Willard commended Gillespie’s all-around abilities as an athletic guard with a strong emphasis on scoring and defending at a high level. Moreover, he expressed confidence in Gillespie’s drive to continuously improve and motivate those around him.
Gillespie’s impressive statistics reflect significant growth and development as a player, notably increasing his productivity from his freshman to sophomore year and achieving 22 double-figure scoring games, including a career-high 26 points in a single game.
Before his college career, Gillespie left an indelible mark at Greeneville High School, earning the title of 2022 Tennessee 3A Mr. Basketball. His remarkable high school record includes 2,129 career points and leading Greeneville to the 3A state championship as a senior, where he was named Most Valuable Player.
