UMaine Women’s Hockey Players Explore Transfer Options

The University of Maine women’s ice hockey team is currently undergoing significant changes, with six players having entered the NCAA Division 1 transfer portal. One of these players is Olivia King, a talented senior who still has one year of eligibility remaining. King has been a pivotal player for the Black Bears, having competed in 94 career games and achieved a goal and six assists. Regrettably, she encountered challenges this season due to her rigorous academic commitments.

In addition to King, five other players have also chosen to depart from the team. This includes senior goalies Jorden Mattison and Anna LaRose, sophomore defenseman Cora Webber, and freshmen Ashley Kokavec and Bria Holm. Each player has cited their own reasons for seeking a transfer, such as pursuing more playing time and finding programs that offer specific graduate school curriculum.

Despite these departures, Head Coach Molly Engstrom remains optimistic, placing her trust in recruiting players who are dedicated to staying for the long term. Engstrom is currently in the process of bringing in new talent and has already recruited two players, Holm and Kokavec, from the six who are departing.

Looking towards the upcoming season, UMaine anticipates that incoming players will have a significant impact. With the addition of a new goalie and a forward, the team is focused on filling the voids left by the departing players. Engstrom is particularly enthusiastic about the potential of the incoming class and is steadfast in her commitment to enhancing the team with additional talent from the transfer portal.

Reflecting on the previous season, UMaine had a competitive record, despite experiencing several narrow losses. Engstrom, a former U.S. Olympic team star defenseman, is resolute in her determination to guide the team towards improvement and success. Despite the challenges, she remains positive and believes in the team’s ability to take the next step forward.

Although the Black Bears may be losing valuable players, they are preparing for a promising future. With strategic recruitment and a dedicated coaching staff, the team is steadfast in their focus on overcoming obstacles and reaching new heights in the upcoming season.
