The University of Portland’s men’s tennis team suffered a challenging 4-1 defeat in their recent West Coast Conference road match against Pacific at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center in Stockton, California. With this loss, the Pilots’ overall record drops to 9-6, while the Tigers’ season improves to an impressive 13-1.
Pacific secured the doubles point with 6-2 victories at positions No. 1 and No. 3, giving them an early advantage in the match. However, Portland’s Maxim Groysman was able to secure a point for the Pilots with a 6-4, 6-2 win against Terence Das at No. 4 singles. Despite Groysman’s victory, the Tigers clinched the win with straight-set victories at the top three singles positions.
Following the match, Portland’s head coach Aaron Gross acknowledged that it was not their best performance but credited Pacific for their strong play. “Not our best performance, but full credit to Pacific,” Gross said. “They played as well in doubles as anybody has played against us this year. I’m sure they had extra motivation since we got them at their place last year. Due to a weird anomaly in the schedule, we had to play them two years in a row on the road, which is tough.”
The Pilots plan to continue their WCC action with a pair of road matches at San Diego and Pepperdine on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
The match results were as follows:
-Singles
1. Alam, Peter (PACIFIC) def. Oscar Brown (POR) 6-4, 6-3
