It is with profound sorrow that we announce the sudden and untimely passing of Gabriel Holt, a former student at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) and a gifted rugby league player. At the tender age of 21, Gabriel had already made a significant impression on his peers, both on and off the field.
A native of Atherton near Wigan, Gabriel represented the Wales Rugby League students squad and had also played for Wigan St Patricks and the University of Central Lancashire. Bryan Jones, the Dean of the UCLan School of Health, Social Work and Sport, spoke highly of Gabriel, describing him as a dignified and self-assured young gentleman who was held in high esteem by both his peers and the university staff. In addition to his athletic abilities, Gabriel was also known for his philanthropic endeavors, which left a lasting impact on the community.
His influence on the UCLan Rugby League team was considerable, and his recent achievement in securing a spot in international student representation underscored his commitment and skill. His legacy of optimism and teamwork will undoubtedly endure at the university, and plans are underway to commemorate his memory.
Not only did Gabriel make noteworthy contributions to the sports community, but he was also renowned for his charitable work during his time at the University of Central Lancashire. To honour his memory, his dearest friends have initiated a fundraising effort, which has garnered over £5,000 to date. The overwhelming support and generosity are a true testament to the profound impact Gabriel had on those around him.
Councillor Matthew Brown, leader of Preston City Council, also conveyed his condolences and paid homage to Gabriel, acknowledging the significance of his passing to the larger community.
At times of such profound grief, it is imperative to come together and provide support to one another. The memory of Gabriel Holt will undoubtedly remain alive in the hearts of all those he touched. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and the entire UCLan community during this challenging period.
While we mourn the loss of a bright and promising young individual, we must also celebrate the influence he had on the lives of those around him. Gabriel’s memory will serve as a wellspring of inspiration for many, and the values of optimism, teamwork, and philanthropy that he embodied will continue to resonate at the University of Central Lancashire for years to come.
