The North High School basketball team had the privilege of visiting the State House as a reward for their remarkable achievement of winning back-to-back Division 1 state championships. The team was welcomed by state Sen. Michael Moore, who sponsored the visit, along with Central Mass. colleagues Sen. Peter Durant and Sen. Robyn Kennedy, to celebrate their 59-53 state championship victory over Franklin in March.
According to their coach, Al Pettway, the team’s success was not a stroke of luck, but the result of their strong bond and teamwork, developed over the years of knowing each other since childhood. Pettway expressed his pride in the team, highlighting their camaraderie and genuine care for each other, both on and off the court.
Following a previous devastating loss in the Division 1 playoffs, the team worked hard to improve their gameplay and communication, fostering a deep sense of connection and unity. They went on to secure an impressive undefeated record of 24-0 this season, only facing defeats from powerhouse teams outside of Massachusetts.
Despite facing personal tragedy and loss throughout the year, including the tragic murder of a former teammate, Carl-Hens Beliard, the team rallied together to support one another. They dedicated their season to Beliard and proudly honoured his memory by wearing his number and a special screen-print on their practice jerseys.
Assistant coach Patrick Wetherbee emphasised the crucial role of every team member, highlighting a pivotal moment where a late-game shot by Omari Scott, though not a game-winning one, galvanised the crowd and showcased the team’s collective effort on the court.
The team’s success and resilience have not only resonated on the court but also within the Worcester community, as they garnered significant support from their loyal fans. Their impactful presence was evident in the massive turnout of Worcester fans at their games, demonstrating the strong bond between the team and their supporters.
Looking ahead, while the possibility of a three-peat championship looms on the horizon, coach Pettway remains focused on savouring the present moment and ensuring the future prospects of his graduating players. He is careful to guide them towards potential opportunities in college and professional basketball, even considering the option of a year at a preparatory school to further develop their skills and increase their eligibility for athletic scholarships.
Amidst celebratory pizza and lighthearted banter amongst the players, the team’s humility and genuine camaraderie shone through. Sponsor Eddie Fisher praised the team for their lack of big egos and unsportsmanlike behaviour, highlighting their true character and sportsmanship both on and off the court.
The North High School basketball team’s visit to the State House was a well-deserved honour, celebrating their exceptional achievements and exemplifying the powerful impact of teamwork, resilience, and community support in their impressive journey to success.
