The Coastal Carolina men’s tennis team suffered a challenging 4-2 defeat at the hands of the South Alabama Jaguars in Sun Belt Conference competition at the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Courts in Mobile, Alabama. Consequently, the Chanticleers’ conference record dropped to 2-5, while the Jaguars’ record improved to 4-4.
During the doubles contest, South Alabama claimed the advantage by emerging victorious in the first and second-seeded matches. The third-seeded match between Rivers Cahill and Jesus Garcia of Coastal Carolina and Juan Accossatto and Harold van Raemdonck from USA remained unresolved at a score of 6-5.
Shifting focus to the singles matches, the Chants managed to secure victories in the first and sixth-seeded matches. Ryuya Ata, the top seed, achieved a hard-fought triumph over South Alabama’s Jack Clements with a tight 7-6 win in the third set. Additionally, Eric Tripathi clinched a win against the No. 6 seed, van Raemdonck, in three sets. Despite these efforts, the Jaguars emerged victorious in the remaining four singles matches. Notably, CCU’s No. 2 seed, Carlos Berna Ruiz, took USA’s Rostislav Halfinger to a third set but unfortunately succumbed to a 6-1 loss in the deciding frame.
The setback brought Coastal Carolina’s conference record to 2-5, while the Jaguars improved to 4-4, preparing for the Sun Belt Tournament the following week in Rome, Georgia.
Looking ahead, CCU will conclude the regular season with a match against the Troy Trojans at 2 P.M. ET at the Lunsford Tennis Complex in Troy, Alabama.
