Springboks Prop Ox Nche in New Rassie Erasmus Experiment

South African rugby enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the latest developments from Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus, who has revealed an innovative plan involving the formidable front-row player Ox Nche. This new strategy involves Nche, traditionally a loosehead prop, learning to play on both sides of the front-row.

During the Sharks’ dominant round of 16 victory over Zebre Parma last weekend, Nche was observed transitioning to the tighthead position in the second half, reportedly at the behest of Erasmus. The coach aims to provide Nche with tighthead training, potentially positioning him in that role for the Springboks’ upcoming opening Test against Wales on June 22, which falls outside the traditional Test window and coincides with the United Rugby Championship final. As a result, overseas-based players such as Wilco Louw, Frans Malherbe, and Neethling Fouche may be unavailable for selection.

This strategic move is part of Erasmus’s comprehensive approach to offer versatility within the team while refreshing the front-row lineup in anticipation of the next Rugby World Cup cycle. With 26 Test caps under his belt since his debut in 2018, Nche, at 28 years old, is poised to secure a prominent position leading up to the 2027 tournament. His notable contributions to the Springboks, including his standout performance in last year’s World Cup semi-final against England, demonstrate his value to the team.

In addition to Nche’s potential role, reports suggest that Cheetahs hooker Marnus van der Merwe may also be under consideration for the Wales Test due to his ability to fulfill a comparable role to Deon Fourie, including his capacity to play on the flank. Erasmus is reportedly viewing the upcoming matches against Wales and Portugal as opportunities to trial emerging talent, while more experienced players are likely to be deployed in subsequent Tests against Ireland.

The decision regarding team captaincy is pending, with a preference for a locally based captain. However, there is a possibility that Siya Kolisi could retain the captaincy if Racing 92 is willing to make him available for all camps and Tests.

The rugby community is eagerly awaiting the outcome of these strategic decisions and player considerations, as the Springboks continue to adapt and strengthen their lineup with a focus on the future.
