Former Chelsea star Frank Lampard has respectfully declined the role of Canada’s new head coach, expressing his desire to re-establish his managerial career. Following a less than successful interim stint with Chelsea, Lampard has been without a managerial position and is now aiming for a potential return to the field.
The Telegraph reported that Lampard engaged in discussions with the Canadian Football Federation about the prospect of leading the national team into the 2026 World Cup. However, the 45-year-old has ultimately chosen to remove himself from consideration for the position.
Despite his current break from management, Lampard has voiced his eagerness to get back to work, while also expressing his enjoyment of family life at the present time. He emphasized his enthusiasm for the job and his pleasure in working with players and teams.
Lampard’s managerial journey began with Derby County, where he guided the team to the Championship play-offs in 2019. He then took on the role of Chelsea’s interim manager, achieving a fourth-place finish in the Champions League and leading the team to the FA Cup final. However, his time with Chelsea came to an end after a series of disappointing results.
Following his departure from Chelsea, Lampard briefly managed Everton before ultimately being relieved of his duties. His return to Stamford Bridge last year also proved to be short-lived, with the club recording just one victory in 11 games under his leadership.
Canada is currently in search of a new manager to succeed John Herdman, who left the role at the end of August. In the meantime, Herdman’s former assistant, Mauro Biello, has been overseeing the team.
As Lampard eagerly anticipates his next managerial opportunity, his decision to decline the position with Canada underscores his unwavering dedication to the field and his anticipation of a future return to management.
