Great Rugby Action at Powell River Otago Club

The Powell River Otago Rugby Club recently hosted two thrilling matches against formidable opponents from Vancouver Island. The matches, held at Cranberry Field, showcased the old boys team from Vancouver Island Ebb Tide and senior players from the Victoria-area Castaway Wanderers.

In the old boys game, Otago successfully competed against the Ebb Tide, with the final score at four tries to three in favour of the opposition. Otago’s coach, Jack Beardmore, emphasised the sportsmanship and camaraderie displayed during the game. He also noted the unique rules of old boys rugby, including players over 70 wearing yellow shorts and being exempt from tackles.

The senior team game witnessed Otago facing off against the Castaway Wanderers, culminating in a tense final score of six tries to five in favour of the opposition. Despite the loss, Beardmore expressed pride in his team’s performance, commending the leadership of captain Steve Quigley. He also recognised the skill and experience of the opposition, acknowledging that several players had been competing for nearly 50 years.

Looking forward, Beardmore conveyed his enthusiasm for the 50th anniversary of the Otago Rugby Club and confirmed plans for more upcoming games. He underscored the club’s dedication to development and improvement, highlighting the positive trajectory of the team.

In anticipation of the anniversary celebrations, Ebb Tide has already committed to returning for another old boys game. Additionally, Otago is preparing for a challenging match against the Castaway Wanderers on May 17, featuring premier league and third division players.
