The men’s basketball program at the University of Michigan has recently welcomed two former assistants of Dusty May from Florida Atlantic University (FAU) to join his coaching staff. Drew Williamson and Kyle Church have officially been appointed as assistant coaches by Michigan Athletics. They will be joining Justin Joyner from St. Mary’s and Michael Boynton Jr. from Oklahoma State as part of the new additions to the Michigan basketball coaching team.
Akeem Miskdeen, a former assistant with the Georgia Bulldogs, is the only incoming assistant who has not yet appeared in the University of Michigan directory. However, his social media profile has been updated to reflect his new role, indicating his presence within the Michigan community.
In addition to the new assistant coaches, May will also be reuniting with Brandon Gilbert, his former Assistant to the Head Coach at FAU. Gilbert will take on a similar role as the Special Assistant to the Head Coach for the Wolverines.
Both Williamson and Church have impressive backgrounds in college basketball coaching. Church has been working with May for the past five seasons, two at Louisiana Tech and three at Florida, while Williamson was recognized as one of the top NCAA Division II assistant coaches in the country in October 2020.
In an interview, May discussed his approach to building the team’s roster and coaching staff. He emphasized the importance of finding the right people and evaluating their compatibility with the team’s characteristics. May also highlighted the challenges of navigating the Transfer Portal, where college athletes can explore transfer opportunities to other schools.
May’s focus on patience, belief in player development, and commitment to teamwork reflects his dedication to building a strong foundation for the Michigan basketball program. He aims to create a healthy and supportive environment for both the coaching staff and the players, emphasizing the significance of intangible qualities in shaping the team’s success.
As he finalizes his coaching staff and prepares to fill the team’s roster, May is committed to approaching the process with careful evaluation and consideration. He stresses the need to understand the motivations and influences of potential recruits, recognizing that the right people can make a significant impact on the team’s performance and cohesion.
In the coming season, May will continue to strategize and make decisions that align with the long-term success of the Michigan basketball program. With the addition of experienced and dedicated coaching staff, along with a calculated approach to building the team, the Wolverines are poised to make significant strides in the college basketball landscape.
