Cara Consuegra has been appointed as the seventh head coach of the women’s basketball team at Marquette University. This announcement was made by Vice President and Director of Athletics Bill Scholl on Wednesday afternoon.
Having served as an assistant coach at Marquette from 2004-11, Consuegra possesses an impressive record of 225-169 in her 13 seasons at Charlotte, with seven postseason appearances, including a NCAA tournament berth in 2022.
Expressing his enthusiasm about Consuegra leading the team, Bill Scholl cited her deep understanding of the university’s values and the women’s basketball program. He emphasized her commitment to the holistic development of the student-athletes both on and off the court.
Consuegra also shared her excitement about returning to Marquette, highlighting her appreciation for the university and the strong tradition of women’s basketball. She expressed her eagerness to reconnect with the program’s rich history while leading it to new heights.
During her tenure at Charlotte, Consuegra led the team to three NCAA tournament appearances and produced 30 all-conference performers. She was also a finalist for the Maggie Dixon Award in 2011-12, which recognises the nation’s top rookie head coach in women’s college basketball.
Prior to her time at Charlotte, Consuegra served as an assistant coach at Marquette for seven seasons, playing a pivotal role in the Golden Eagles’ success, including two NCAA tournament appearances and a WNIT Championship in 2008.
Consuegra’s impressive coaching career is preceded by her own standout performance as a player at Iowa, where she was an All-American point guard and led the Hawkeyes to two NCAA tournament appearances. She was also selected as an All-Big Ten First Team member her senior year.
The formal introduction of Cara Consuegra as the head coach of Marquette women’s basketball will take place at 2 p.m. CT at the Alumni Memorial Union on the university’s campus on Thursday.
With her extensive experience and dedication to the sport, Cara Consuegra is set to lead the Marquette women’s basketball program to a new era of success and excellence.
