Minnesota Gophers Boost Lineup with Liam Souliere as Transfer Goalie

The announcement of transfer goalie, Liam Souliere, joining the Minnesota Gophers men’s hockey team for the 2024-25 season represents a significant addition to the team’s roster. Head Coach Bob Motzko expressed his enthusiasm about this new acquisition.

Souliere, who previously served as the primary starter for Penn State over the past two seasons, brings a wealth of experience to the Gophers’ goalie group. At 25 years of age and hailing from Brampton, Ontario, his arrival is anticipated to make a strong contribution to the team in the upcoming season.

Following the departure of goalie Justen Close, who had been the team’s starter for the past 2 ½ seasons, Coach Bob Motzko recognized the need for a suitable replacement. The addition of Souliere, with 84 career games under his belt, is perceived as a crucial step towards bolstering the team’s performance in the coming season.

Standing at 5-11 and weighing 181 pounds, Souliere’s presence in the team offers Coach Motzko a valuable option in the goalie position. Alongside Nathan Airey, who served as the backup for Close in the 2023-24 season, and sophomore Zach Weise, Souliere’s experience and skill are expected to enhance the team’s overall performance in the upcoming season.

In the last season, Airey displayed promising potential, achieving a record of 1-1 with a 3.23 goals-against average and .865 save percentage in three games. Souliere’s performance at Penn State has been equally commendable, with a record of 19-15-1 and an impressive 2.43 GAA and .917 save percentage in the 2022-23 season. Although Souliere’s performance dipped slightly in the most recent season, with a 12-14-1 record, a 3.39 GAA, and .887 save percentage, his track record of achievements demonstrates his capabilities as a skilled and seasoned goalie.

The addition of Souliere to the Gophers men’s hockey team is expected to bring a new level of strength and depth to the squad. With his arrival, the team is assembling a formidable lineup as they prepare for the challenges of the upcoming season.

Overall, the acquisition of Souliere showcases the Gophers’ commitment to further strengthening their team through strategic player transfers. As the anticipation builds for the 2024-25 season, the addition of Souliere is poised to make a significant impact on the team’s performance, elevating their competitive edge in the collegiate hockey arena.
