The British Columbia Ball Hockey Association has been suspended by the national governing body following serious allegations of misconduct. A convicted criminal and alleged sex offender serving on the board of directors has raised significant concerns about the safety and values upheld by the Canadian Ball Hockey Association (CBHA), leading to increased scrutiny of the BC association.
In addition to the presence of an individual with a criminal record, the BC association has been accused of non-compliance with the BC Societies Act, financial irregularities, and various ethical lapses. These concerns were detailed in a letter from Tim McKenzie, President of the CBHA, to the BC association.
The letter highlighted ambiguous financial transactions, lack of receipts for league fees, and exclusion of certain members from important votes and annual general meetings within the BC association. These discrepancies have raised concerns about financial transparency and fair treatment, as noted by McKenzie.
Furthermore, the letter addressed the BC association’s failure to address concerns raised by officials, parents, and stakeholders. This lack of responsiveness was seen as a significant disregard for community engagement and a sign of inadequate accountability, underlining the severity of the situation.
In response to these serious allegations, the Canadian Ball Hockey Association has assumed management of both adult and minor ball hockey associations and leagues in BC to prevent any disruption to the upcoming spring and summer seasons. Additionally, the national body has initiated an investigation into the allegations with the aim of revitalising and reforming the BC organization.
