UNCW Dominates CAA Men’s Golf Championship Opening Round with Record-Breaking Performance

The University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) men’s golf team has achieved a significant milestone at the CAA Men’s Golf Championship, setting a new single-round record with an impressive 16-under round. This history-making performance occurred during the championship held at Dataw Island, where the Seahawks have taken an early lead after completing 18 holes.

Currently, UNCW is leading by two strokes, with Elon following closely at -14 and Charleston at -12. In fourth place is Campbell at -8, trailed by Drexel and Delaware at -1 and +1, respectively. The 11-team field also includes William & Mary, Monmouth, North Carolina A&T, as well as a tie between Hofstra and Towson.

In the individual standings, UNCW’s Sander Akeren and Gray Mitchum, along with Charleston’s Kieron van Wyk, are tied for the lead at 6-under. Notably, their performances mark only three of 19 in tournament history at 6-under or better. Last year’s medalist, UNCW’s Patrick Sparks, is one shot off the lead in fourth place. Furthermore, Elon’s Bronson Myers and Jack Wieler, Charleston’s Zach Reuland, and Campbell’s Erik Johansson are all tied for fifth at 4-under.

UNCW’s remarkable achievement in surpassing their 15-under record from the previous year’s second round at Dataw is worth noting. This accomplishment equaled James Madison’s 2017 second round at Salisbury Country Club in Virginia.

During the first round, Monmouth’s Colt Ingram achieved the sixth hole-in-one in the history of the Championship with his ace on the par-3 12th hole, a feat that hadn’t been accomplished since Charleston’s Colin Hamilton in 2018. Additionally, the round experienced a brief delay due to lightning, prompting a slight schedule change to avoid further weather disruptions.

The Second Round of the competition will commence on Monday at 8:30 a.m., with the final group teeing off at 12:18 p.m. The event is being held at Dataw Island’s Cotton Dike Course, which spans 6,849 yards with a par of 72.
