Kentucky Wildcats Land Lamont Butler, San Diego State Transfer

The University of Kentucky has announced a significant addition to their basketball roster with the recruitment of Lamont Butler. This development was officially unveiled by KSR’s Matt Jones, who confirmed that the Wildcats had successfully secured the talents of Lamont Butler from San Diego State.

Butler’s trajectory in college basketball has been nothing short of impressive, as he has risen from being a relatively obscure prospect to a standout player in the Final Four. Renowned for his outstanding skills as a perimeter defender, Butler’s impact on the court transcends traditional statistics.

Measuring 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 205 pounds, Butler initially joined San Diego State as a 3-star recruit in 2020. Despite receiving offers from prestigious institutions such as Washington, Colorado, Boise State, and Saint Mary’s, he ultimately committed to the Aztecs. During his time at Polytechnic High School in California, Butler was ranked 243rd nationally and 40th among point guards by 247 Sports Composite.

In his inaugural year at San Diego State, Butler saw limited playing time, appearing in 28 games and averaging just 12.4 minutes per game. However, he quickly made a substantial impact in his second year, boasting an impressive average of 7.3 points, 2.1 assists, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.7 steals in 25.4 minutes per game. His performance garnered recognition with a spot on the Mountain West All-Defensive Team.

The subsequent season witnessed Butler’s ascent to national prominence as he played a pivotal role in San Diego State’s journey to the national championship game. With averages of 8.8 points, 2.7 assists, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game, Butler left an indelible mark and made history with a decisive buzzer-beater in the national semifinal game.

In the most recent season, Butler further solidified his status as a top-tier player, earning the accolade of Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year while maintaining averages of 9.3 points, 3.0 assists, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game.

The addition of Lamont Butler to the Kentucky Wildcats’ roster represents a significant reinforcement for the forthcoming 2024-25 season, complementing other standout players such as Amari Williams, Travis Perry, and Colin Chandler. Enthusiasts of basketball can eagerly anticipate witnessing Butler in action for the Wildcats.
