The Buffalo Bills have made a surprising decision in the NFL Draft by selecting English rugby union winger Travis Clayton. Despite his position in the eighth tier of domestic rugby, Clayton captured the attention of the Bills and was chosen as the 221st overall pick in the seventh round of the draft in Detroit.
At 23 years of age, Clayton has no prior experience in playing American football at a competitive level. Nevertheless, the Bills have shown confidence in his abilities and anticipate his transition to the offensive lineman position. Currently playing for Basingstoke in the Counties 2 Hampshire division, Clayton has not participated in a match since March 2023.
In response to his selection, Clayton conveyed his belief in successfully transitioning from rugby to American football. The International Player Pathway program seeks to offer opportunities for players from around the world to exhibit their skills in the NFL. This year, all 32 NFL teams will have extra spots in their practice squads exclusively earmarked for international players who have emerged from the pathway program.
Additionally, teams with international players in their practice squads will have the option to elevate them to the active roster up to three times during the season.
