A Look into the Future of Basketball in Tasmania

Basketball enthusiasts in Tasmania are eagerly anticipating the government’s backing as Basketball Tasmania (BTas) advocates for the establishment of three new courts at Elphin Sports Centre as part of the NTCA redevelopment.

In a recent open letter to the Tasmanian basketball community, BTas CEO Ben Smith conveyed his enthusiasm and resolve for the project. Both major political parties have pledged funding for the construction, and now the basketball community awaits the government’s transformation of these commitments into tangible actions.

Smith is optimistic about the government’s fulfilment of its promises and is requesting an audience to evaluate the progress of the projects. He notes the Launceston Council’s significant involvement in the development, given their prior planning efforts and possession of blueprints for the proposed facilities.

Nevertheless, the current scheduling for community basketball remains a formidable obstacle, and the introduction of three new courts will only partially address the demand. A report from the Launceston Council a few years ago indicated that the greater Launceston area necessitates a minimum of 16 to 18 courts, signifying a substantial deficit in facilities for basketball games and events.

Despite these challenges, Basketball Tasmania is contemplating the temporary utilization of school gyms as a stop-gap measure. Smith underscores that 57% of clubs in the region lack essential facilities such as clubrooms, bars, or canteens, underscoring the urgent necessity for enhanced infrastructure.

While construction on the new courts at Elphin Sports Centre has not commenced, Smith has succeeded in raising the priority of the basketball precinct in the NTCA redevelopment plan. Nonetheless, finalization is pending, and the basketball community eagerly awaits further advancements.

The hurdles confronting the basketball community in Launceston are significant. Yet, with sustained efforts and potential government support, the future appears promising. As developments unfold, basketball enthusiasts remain hopeful for a favourable outcome that will benefit the entire community.
