The wheelchair access issue at the Eden Park estate in Rugby has raised concerns among residents, particularly those who care for individuals with mobility issues. Adrian Eade, a resident of the estate, has expressed apprehension about his wife Liz, who has MS, being at risk of potential accidents if she were to venture out alone in her wheelchair due to the lack of proper access.
According to Adrian, the pathways within the estate are intermittent, with some areas lacking pavements, forcing wheelchair and pushchair users to navigate the roads alongside vehicles. This situation not only restricts freedom of movement for individuals with disabilities but also poses serious safety hazards. The inadequate dropped kerbs and grassed-over pathways further exacerbate the issue, making it difficult for individuals like Liz to move around safely.
The couple specifically chose their home in Spruce Close due to its supposed accessibility features, which were promised by the developer, Cala Homes. However, the reality turned out to be vastly different from what was initially presented. Despite their efforts to address the issue with both the developer and local authorities, the couple has faced obstacles in finding a resolution to the problem.
Upon contacting Warwickshire County Council (WCC), it was revealed that the responsibility for the estate’s accessibility lies with the developer, Cala Homes, as the site has not yet been adopted by the Highway Authority. Additionally, despite assurances from the developer that all plans were approved and shared with customers, residents like Adrian and Liz were left unaware of key details pertaining to the accessibility of the estate.
In response to the concerns raised, a spokesperson for Cala Homes emphasised the company’s commitment to inclusive design, but also clarified that all developments are subject to approvals from regulatory bodies. The spokesperson stated that the local authority issues permissions related to street design, and that all roads and pathways within the Eden Park development are being delivered in line with council-approved plans.
Meanwhile, a representative from Warwickshire County Council affirmed that the responsibility for addressing the access issue lies with the developer, as the estate has not yet been adopted by the Highway Authority.
