Two tennis players from the University of Pennsylvania have secured automatic berths in the 2024 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships. Freshman Esha Velaga and junior Eileen Wang have both solidified their positions in the championship, scheduled to be held from May 20-25 at Oklahoma State University.
Velaga, a rising star in the realm of collegiate tennis, has exhibited exceptional form throughout the season. Boasting a remarkable 29-6 record, including an impressive 15-3 record during the spring campaign, Velaga has established herself as a formidable presence on the court. Notably, she is the first freshman from Penn to qualify for the singles postseason since Iuliia Bryzgalova’s participation in 2019. Her outstanding 5-0 record in the Ivy League underscores her dominance in the sport.
Furthermore, Velaga will also be participating in the doubles championship alongside her partner, Wang. Together, they have attained a doubles ranking of #62 and hold an 8-4 record as they head into the championships. Their four-match winning streak in the fall season, which includes victories against formidable opponents such as Liberty, Richmond, South Florida, and Temple, serves as a testament to their strong chemistry and skill as a doubles team.
This notable accomplishment represents a significant milestone for the University of Pennsylvania women’s tennis team, and both Velaga and Wang are certain to bring honour to their institution at the upcoming championships. With their unwavering determination and undeniable talent, there is no question that these two athletes will leave a lasting impression on the court in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
As the championships approach, the Penn community eagerly looks forward to the opportunity to cheer on these outstanding athletes as they represent their university on a national stage. All eyes will be on Velaga and Wang as they demonstrate their prowess in the world of collegiate tennis, and the entire Penn community is prepared to rally behind them and extend their support.
We extend our best wishes to Velaga and Wang as they embark on this remarkable journey to the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships.
