The Inspiring Women of Rugby: Making a Difference

During the week of 6th to 12th May, five years ago, Molly Smith, from Sedgefield, undertook an extraordinary journey to secure the future of Team GB’s wheelchair rugby. Motivated by her brother’s participation in the sport and the impending funding cuts to the club, she made a commitment to run at least 5k every day for an entire year. Her goal was to raise £3,650 to contribute to the three million pounds needed to save the team.

Despite facing injuries and obstacles along the way, the 29-year-old surpassed her target and raised nearly £6,500, making a significant contribution towards securing Team GB’s future. Reflecting on her incredible feat, she stated, “I didn’t know I would be able to do it. It was initially for Jack but it’s for all the team who have been so supportive to me – they even turned up to one of my runs.”

Further showcasing the commitment and determination of women in rugby, Jess Cheesman, a director at Darlington RFC, undertook the challenge of playing the highest ever game of rugby on Everest. Alongside 25 others, the team braved high altitudes and extreme conditions to break two world records and raise over £250,000 for the charity Wooden Spoon, which supports children and young people with disabilities or facing disadvantage.

Their remarkable efforts not only demonstrated their dedication to the sport but also highlighted their commitment to charitable causes.

In addition to their inspiring athletic achievements, the resilience and courage displayed by these women serve as a testament to the impact of rugby both on and off the field. These stories illustrate the power of sport in driving positive change and inspiring individuals to go above and beyond for causes they believe in.

Furthermore, plans for a memorial to honour the five Second World War airmen who tragically lost their lives when their plane crashed in the region were underway. The memorial, to be unveiled at Crook Community Leisure Centre, serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by individuals in service to their country.

As we remember and honour the bravery and selflessness of those who came before us, let us also celebrate the remarkable achievements of women in rugby, who continue to inspire us with their unwavering dedication and passion for making a difference.
