The Journey of Shane Evans: From Player to Coach

Shane Evans found himself at a pivotal moment when he completed his studies at Silver Lake College. Hailing from Milwaukee, he had to make the weighty decision of whether to pursue a law degree or remain in the city of Manitowoc, a location that had become deeply meaningful to him. Opting for the unconventional path, Evans chose to stay in Manitowoc, a choice for which he remains grateful to this day.

Following his graduation, Evans embarked on a career as a special education teacher before eventually assuming the role of assistant coach for the Manitowoc Lincoln boys basketball team, which he held for a duration of five years. Recently, he has been announced as the new head coach, a development that has filled him with great enthusiasm.

“I am exceedingly thrilled,” Evans expressed. “This opportunity seemed almost too good to be true. While I had always harboured a desire to engage in coaching in some capacity, it was not until I began coaching that I realized my aspiration to become a head coach.”

The vacancy in the coaching position arose following the resignation of the previous coach, Thadd Cornell, who had made the decision to dedicate more time to his ailing parents. Evans, who had previously worked under Cornell, attributes his familiarity with the program and community as contributing factors to his successful candidacy for the head coach position.

“Many other coaches submitted their applications, including some prominent figures,” Evans remarked. “However, I already possess strong relationships with the players and their families. As one of the coaches who worked extensively with the others in the program, I deemed my experience to be an advantage.”

Beyond the basketball court, Evans comprehends the importance of his role in aiding the personal growth of the players, not solely as athletes. He abides by the mantra “energy, effort, and excellence,” which he instils both within the classroom and on the court.

With the objective of building on the groundwork laid by Cornell, Evans is determined to guide Manitowoc Lincoln to unprecedented heights. The team concluded the previous season with a 12-13 overall record and a 9-9 record in the FRCC.

Looking ahead, Evans is deeply focused on continual improvement. The team is set to welcome back juniors Brayden Steinbecker and Edward Bolchen, both of whom were recognized as second team all-conference players. Evans is resolute in his determination to fortify the team and strive for a regional championship.

“We must restore pride in Lincoln,” Evans asserted. “The primary objective is to reinstate pride within both the school and the community.”

In his pursuit of success, Evans acknowledges the significance of youth development. Not only does he intend to cultivate the players, but he also seeks to nurture aspiring coaches, emphasizing the impact of investing in the grassroots level.

“When you consider De Pere, a powerhouse in the Fox River Classic Conference, you must study the youth level,” Evans emphasised. “It is imperative to be prepared to engage in the development of both talented players and coaches. By nurturing coaches, we can cultivate superior players.”

With unwavering determination and a clear vision, Evans is devoted to fostering excellence among his players and throughout the entire program. His aim is to instil a sense of pride and achievement within both the school and the community, and he eagerly anticipates leading the team towards success.
