The York girls are diligently preparing for the forthcoming NSAA State Tennis Championships at the Woods Tennis Center. A noteworthy change this year is the relocation of the Class A state meet to the customary time slot of Class B, thereby creating an exhilarating shift for the team and their esteemed head coach, Josh Miller.
In spite of this alteration, Coach Miller perceives the adjustment as a propitious opportunity for the team. With the additional time for practice and preparation, the team is wholeheartedly focused on refining their skills and gearing up for the impending competition. Notably, senior players Megan Wright and Ellie Peterson are taking the lead in mentoring and guiding their junior teammates.
The season commenced with a sense of uncertainty, as the team had to fill the void left by four graduating seniors and also contended with an injury to Wright. However, they have persevered and evolved throughout the season, acutely accomplishing their objective of securing victory in over half of their dual matches. Peterson, a dependable mainstay at the top of the lineup, has clinched the No. 3 seed in the lead singles bracket after an impressive 29-2 campaign.
Junior Lael Schwarz has also made noteworthy contributions to the team, demonstrating substantial growth and resilience throughout the season. Her optimistic mindset and unwavering determination have been pivotal in her success, leading to her earning the No. 8 seed in the second singles bracket.
The York team will also be represented in the doubles matches, with the pairing of Wright and freshman Karaline Brekke, as well as the duo of Zoey Cornett and Abby Real. Coach Miller remains sanguine about the team’s prospects, and is resolutely focused on both achieving success at this year’s championships and preparing the younger players for future seasons.
The Class B state tennis meet is scheduled to commence on Monday at the Woods Tennis Center, with the team earnestly readying themselves for the competition. With their sights set on securing medals and acquiring invaluable experience, the York girls are poised to exhibit their skills and determination at the state championships.
