Munster’s Rowntree Unfazed by URC Standings, Focuses on Next Game

Munster’s head coach, Graham Rowntree, remains focused on the upcoming challenges following his team’s bonus-point victory over Edinburgh, a result which briefly saw them rise to the summit of the United Rugby Championship (URC) table.

While the win secures a home quarter-final for Munster, a home semi-final is not guaranteed, as they face competition from Glasgow and Leinster. Despite this, Rowntree is resolutely focused on the next match against Ulster, refusing to be sidetracked by potential scenarios.

In a recent interview with The42.ie, Rowntree stated, “Honestly, it is not spoken about. The next game is what is spoken about, analysing our next opposition. Competition is high and we’ll look to win that game against Ulster. All the permutations for home quarter-finals and home semi-finals… you’ve got to win what’s in front of you.”

Acknowledging preferences for certain match-ups, Rowntree emphasized the team’s confidence in their ability to secure victories in challenging environments. The recent string of away wins – five consecutive and eight in total for the season – reflects their unwavering belief and resilience.

The clash with Edinburgh posed a stern test for Munster, demanding determination and adaptability. Rowntree expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “It was one of the toughest games we have had. But I’m delighted with that. It was far from perfect but we showed some real guts there, because we were dealing with a lot. It was all going against us, particularly the penalty count, but that’s just something you have to manage.”

In the face of adversity, the team’s depth and character shone through as they secured the crucial victory. Rowntree highlighted the contributions of the bench players, particularly acknowledging the impact of Tom Ahern and RG Snyman.

Looking ahead, Munster’s focus remains unwavering as they prepare for the upcoming showdown against Ulster at Thomond Park on June 1. The team’s commitment to taking each match as it comes, without being consumed by the permutations and standings, affirms their professionalism and dedication to the sport.

As they continue to navigate through the URC season, Munster’s determination to confront each challenge head-on and their ability to perform under pressure position them as strong contenders in the league.

The team’s unwavering focus and resilience, combined with their consistent performance, will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping their journey in the URC. While the uncertainty of play-off scenarios looms, Munster’s approach of prioritising present challenges over future possibilities reflects a commendable and disciplined mindset, a hallmark of their success in the league.
