Mississippi State University’s men’s basketball head coach, Chris Jans, has recently agreed to a contract extension that will keep him in his current position until the conclusion of the 2027-28 season. This significant development was disclosed by Pete Thamel of ESPN on Monday morning. According to Thamel, Jans’ base salary will see an increase to $4.2 million per year starting in 2024-25, up from its previous amount of $3.2 million. The extended contract also includes provisions for an annual salary increase and performance-based bonuses.
During Jans’ tenure, the men’s basketball team at Mississippi State has experienced considerable success, participating in consecutive NCAA Tournaments and achieving an impressive record of 42-27 in his two seasons as head coach at Starkville. Notably, Jans holds the distinction of being the last coach to defeat UConn in the NCAA Tournament, a feat he accomplished during his time as head coach at New Mexico State in 2022.
The most recent season culminated with the team amassing a 21-14 record, culminating in an opening round loss to Michigan State in the NCAA Tournament. However, their efforts did not go unnoticed, as the university acknowledged their accomplishments at the 2024 Maroon And White Night several weeks ago. At the event, Jans and his team received five awards, with two of their returning players being honoured for their exceptional performances.
Guard Josh Hubbard received the title of Male Freshman of the Year, earning recognition on the All-SEC Freshman Team, All-SEC Second Team, and receiving the prestigious Bailey Howell Trophy. This award is bestowed annually by the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame to the most outstanding men’s college basketball player in the state of Mississippi. Additionally, forward Cameron Matthews was acclaimed as the Male Breakout Athlete of the Year and was named to the All-SEC Defensive Team for his exceptional contributions throughout the season.
Moreover, the entire men’s basketball team was bestowed with the Moment of the Year award for their historic 77-72 victory over No. 5 Tennessee on Jan. 10. This win was the team’s first triumph over an AP Top 10 team since 2002 and marked a pivotal moment in the team’s journey.
Looking towards the future, the prospects for Mississippi State basketball appear promising, with the addition of five transfer players during the offseason and the commitment of four new players for the 2024 class. With Jans at the helm, the team is poised for further success, and fans can anticipate an engaging and competitive season ahead.
