Heidi Heemskerk has been a dedicated volunteer for an impressive 36 years, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to making a positive impact within the tennis community. Her journey as a volunteer began at the young age of 8, starting off at her soccer club where her family was actively involved. Over the years, Heidi has taken on a multitude of roles, from assisting with club maintenance and canteen duties to coaching juniors, mowing the lawns, and even serving as club president and secretary.
When asked about her favourite part of her role, Heidi highlights the joy of witnessing young children revel in their time on the tennis court and the thrill they experience when making their first connection with a tennis ball. She also cherishes the meaningful friendships that have blossomed as a result of her involvement in the tennis club.
Reflecting on her most cherished tennis memory, Heidi finds it difficult to choose just one. One standout memory is being bestowed with Life Membership of her club, an enormous honour in recognition of her dedication and hard work. Another significant memory for Heidi is her participation in the South Australian Primary Schools Amateur Sports Association (SAPSASA) as a year 5 student, an unprecedented achievement at the time. Her subsequent selection for the next two years and attendance at a talent camp at Wirrina Cove left her feeling truly special.
Heidi’s remarkable journey as a volunteer serves as a shining example of the invaluable contributions that individuals make to their communities. Her passion for tennis and unwavering commitment to uplifting the lives of those around her is truly commendable.
As we mark National Volunteer Week, it is imperative to express our gratitude to extraordinary volunteers like Heidi Heemskerk, whose dedication and selflessness leave an indelible impact on the lives of others. Let us continue to celebrate the diverse passions and talents that individuals bring to their volunteer roles, shaping a brighter and more inclusive future for our communities.
