LIV Golf has officially announced exciting details regarding its upcoming season finale, which will feature a new venue and an updated format for the $50 million Team Championship. The three-day tournament, scheduled to take place from September 20-22, will showcase 13 different teams vying for victory at the prestigious Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas – a suburb of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area.
The revised format for the Team Championship seeks to elevate the level of competition, with all 13 teams set to participate. The top three teams will be granted first-round byes and will automatically qualify for Saturday’s semifinals. The remaining ten teams, ranked 4-13, will engage in five quarterfinal matches on Friday, with the pairings to be announced at a live press conference featuring team captains during tournament week. The five winners from the initial match play round will then progress to the semifinals.
In order to introduce a strategic element, team captains will have the opportunity to choose between singles or foursomes matchups during the first two days of match play. These enhancements to the format are expected to generate heightened excitement throughout the tournament.
LIV Golf Commissioner and CEO, Greg Norman, has expressed his enthusiasm for the new venue, stating, “Our LIV Golf players are eager to compete in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, which boasts a proud golf tradition. Texas is renowned for producing and hosting exceptional golfers who set a high standard while competing for championships. Our LIV Golf Team Championship at Maridoe Golf Club promises to be a remarkable experience for our players and all attending fans.”
The Maridoe Golf Club stands as a distinguished venue, situated just 20 miles from downtown Dallas and ranked among the top three new private courses in 2018 by Golf Digest. The course is known for its challenging layout, offering a unique test for the participating teams. CEO of LIV Golf, Greg Norman, has described the new venue as a “tremendous experience” for both players and fans, further heightening anticipation for the tournament.
As the event approaches, excitement continues to mount, with the Crushers GSC currently leading the pack halfway through the 2024 season. This team, comprised of Byson DeChambeau, Paul Casey, Charles Howell III, and Arniban Lahiri, has sustained its form with consecutive team victories in Jeddah and Hong Kong, holding the top position with 105.50 points. However, the competition is fierce, with the Legion XIII, LIV’s new expansion team led by captain Jon Rahm, Tyrell Hatton, Kieran Vincent, and Caleb Surratt, also performing strongly and securing second place with 94 points.
The global field at LIV Golf’s Team Championship boasts 14 major champions and some of the most prominent names in the sport, including Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Bubba Watson, Louis Oosthuizen, and many others. With such an impressive lineup of talent, the competition promises to be intense and enthralling.
Overall, LIV Golf’s season finale is set to be an unmissable event, featuring a new venue, updated format, and an exceptionally talented field of competitors. Golf enthusiasts and sports fans alike can anticipate three days of captivating golf action at the Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas this coming September.
