Three highly skilled student-athletes hailing from the Portland State men’s tennis team have recently received esteemed accolades for their exceptional academic performance. Graduate student Andrea Brignacca, senior Jonas Hembo, and sophomore Simon Kuszynski have been honoured with placements on the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team, marking a significant achievement in the annals of the program.
To qualify for this prestigious recognition, student-athletes must have participated in at least 70 percent of their team’s dual matches, maintained a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher, and achieved at least sophomore standing both academically and athletically at their institution. Each of the three honourees from Portland State has met and surpassed these qualifications, having participated in a minimum of 14 of the Vikings’ 18 matches in 2024, while collectively upholding an impressive 3.89 cumulative GPA.
Hailing from Markham, Ontario, Simon Kuszynski stands as a prime exemplar of academic excellence, boasting a flawless 4.00 GPA in Finance. His stellar performance on the court includes securing six singles victories, four of which were attained against conference adversaries, as well as ranking second on the team with six doubles triumphs across all three lines.
Another distinguished finance major, Jonas Hembo, hails from Esbjerg, Denmark, and has demonstrated his commitment to academic excellence with a commendable 3.92 GPA. As a senior in 2024, Hembo clinched five singles victories and three doubles triumphs, thus showcasing his prowess both on and off the court.
Andrea Brignacca, currently pursuing a Master of Business Administration, has maintained a remarkable 3.74 graduate GPA. A seasoned player for the Vikings, the Italian athlete has proven his skill at the top three singles positions with a 5-9 record and has contributed five doubles victories in his final season with the team.
